Wilderness Solitude
Deep in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, this trip offers rare quiet, open landscapes, and nights untouched by artificial light.
A Classic Mid-Summer Escape into the Bob Marshall
One of our most popular mid-summer adventures, this trip ventures deep into our Gates Park camp on the North Fork of the Sun River. We spend four nights in this remote riverside location, giving you the time and flexibility to fully immerse yourself in the landscape without the rush of daily travel.
By mid-summer, runoff has completely subsided and the Sun River runs gin-clear and cold, marking the beginning of exceptional fly fishing. Fishing starts early here, often before anyone else arrives in the valley, and solitude is the norm rather than the exception. Early summer brings vibrant wildflowers, lingering snow on surrounding peaks, and lush green meadows, creating a striking backdrop for both fishing and horseback exploration.
For non-fishermen, the area offers a wide range of day rides and hikes, including Bear Top Fire Lookout, Biggs Creek Meadows, Sock Lake beneath the Chinese Wall, and the lower Sun River Valley. Whether you spend your days on the water or on horseback, Gates Park offers a rare combination of variety, flexibility, and true wilderness immersion.
Your Days in the Wilderness
Each day at Gates Park offers a balance of exploration and unhurried time in one of the most remote corners of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. With four nights in a single riverside camp, you’re free to fish, ride, hike, or simply take in the landscape without the pressure of daily travel. Whether you’re drawn to the river, high-country trails, or quiet moments in camp, every day unfolds at its own natural pace.
Day 1 – A High-Country Welcome
Crossing Headquarters Pass into Sun River Wilderness
We begin at the South Fork Teton trailhead and pack up for the ride into the wilderness. Within the first two hours, we crest Headquarters Pass at 7,700 feet, a memorable highlight of the trip.
From the basin below the pass, the trail gradually descends along Headquarters Creek into the North Fork Sun River Valley, opening into wide-angle vistas and prime wildlife habitat. Elk, black bear, deer, and other wildlife are commonly seen along this natural travel corridor.
By evening, we arrive at our semi-permanent camp at Gates Park along the Sun River, where we settle in for the night.
Riding distance: 14 miles
Day 2 – Meadows or Mayflies
Ride High or Fish Hard from Camp
For fishermen, the river calls early. After breakfast, anglers head straight to the water as trout become active around mid-morning. Expect outstanding dry-fly fishing and constant action. It is common for anglers to report catches of 60 or more fish in a single day.
Horseback riders:
There is no travel today, but plenty of adventure. Horseback riders often head out on a day ride to Biggs Creek Meadows, where sweeping views of the Continental Divide stretch to the west and the Sun River Valley unfolds in every other direction.
Riding distance: 5 miles
Day 3 – Fire Lookouts and Endless Water
Panoramic Views or New Water by Horseback
Day riders typically set out for Bear Top Fire Lookout, the only remaining lookout in the valley. The trail is excellent, with most of the route ridden on horseback before hiking the final 45 minutes to the summit. Lunch is enjoyed at the top while visiting with the fire watch, surrounded by sweeping 360-degree views.
Total riding distance: 10 miles
Fishermen return to the river in the morning, often mixing things up by riding an hour upstream or downstream by horseback to explore new stretches of water. No matter where you fish on the Sun River, the experience remains remarkable.
Day 4 – Sock Lake or One More Perfect Day
Choose Your Final Adventure
On the final full day, ambitious riders may opt for the journey to Sock Lake. This approximately 14-mile round-trip ride is demanding but unforgettable. Sock Lake sits in a quiet alpine bowl beneath the Chinese Wall and is one of the most striking destinations in the area.
Fishermen return to the river for their last full day of casting. With sore elbows and big smiles, anglers are guided to new sections of water to finish the trip on a high note.
Day 5 – A Scenic Ride Home
Morning Light and One Last Pass
We break camp early and head back over Headquarters Pass, starting before the heat and dust of the day. Lunch is enjoyed in the basin below the pass, where mountain goats and bighorn sheep are often seen on the surrounding slopes.
The ride concludes at the South Fork Teton trailhead in the early afternoon.
Riding distance: 14 miles
Activities & Experience
Ideal for Mixed Groups of Riders and Anglers
This trip is exceptionally well-suited for groups that include both fishermen and non-fishermen. Anglers can easily access multiple stretches of the Sun River from camp, either on foot or via short horseback rides, allowing us to target the best fishing conditions each day.
Non-fishermen enjoy outstanding day rides to destinations like Bear Top, Sock Lake, and other scenic points of interest. Hiking opportunities are plentiful, from meadow walks in Gates Park to trails along Gates Lake and the Sun River. The open ridges near camp are easy to navigate and frequently reward guests with wildlife sightings.
Fly Fishing at Its Peak
Gin-Clear Water and Aggressive Trout
This trip coincides with the beginning of our best fishing season. The river runs clear and cold, and trout aggressively feed on the surface. Dry-fly fishing is exceptional, with many anglers landing 60 or more fish per day. Certain holes produce rapid-fire action, with multiple fish caught in quick succession.
The Sun River is wild, beautiful, and remarkably uncrowded. Seeing another angler during your trip is rare.
Nights Under the Stars
A Sky You Won’t Forget
The extreme remoteness of the Bob Marshall means zero light pollution and exceptionally clear night skies. Guests are treated to vivid views of stars, constellations, the Milky Way, and frequent shooting stars.
With long summer days, sunset comes around 10 p.m., making it easy to linger by the fire and soak in a night sky few people ever experience.
What to Bring
Packing for Mid-Summer Comfort
As this is a 7 day travel trip, with modest travel days. Our recommended camping gear list is downloadable from the link below. As a summary however, you’ll want to keep in mind the following specifics about this trip. There are 4 travel days and 3 lay over days (non-traveling).
This trip covers some incredible country ranging from the beautiful vistas of the Sun Valley in early summer. The average riding day is 11 miles and we travel every other day. This trip has great opportunity for riders, photographers, hikers, fishermen, and explorers.
The things that are important and make your trip most comfortable are layered clothing appropriate for early summer. It can get hot during the day, but the nights will be surprising cool.
We can also get a thunderstorm on any given day, so you’ll need good rain gear that you can wear riding or hiking. Comforable hiking/riding shoes are a must, and a good assortment of hiking socks varying from light to medium weight. Also, you may consider chaps for riding, or silk under your jeans as we do have some ground to cover on horseback. This will mitigate chafing.
